Wood has been a favorite choice with the designers of audio and video components for ages, and it continues to be so in these modern times, when there’s nothing cooler than going organic. In the past, we have reported about some of the coolest turntables made from wood, including Montegiro’s luxurious wooden turntable. But Audiowood’s one-of-a-kind wooden turntables by Joey Scilley are in a league of their own! Joel Scilley creates custom turntables out of uncommon woods such as burlwood. I’m safely on my way to becoming “America’s premier builder of burlwood turntables!” says Joel. Though all his designs look elegant and unique, the Barky, made from a raw-edged wood is the yummiest with its watermelon looks. Big Red is another exotic turntable crafted from redwood burl with solid Gabon ebony feet, arm board and sub-platter. This table features solid-brass cones, a VPI platter and bearing, an Origin Live motor/controller kit and accommodates SME arms. The turntables boast pristine sound quality for a blissful acoustic experience. The prices for the most expensive turntables start at $3,000 and go up to $4,000.

The luxury brands are reporting losses, and the figures are out for the upper strata of society who were presumed to be recession-proof. Forbes reports an article on the losses incurred by the high net worth individuals. If last year there were 1,125 billionaires who featured on the Forbes list of the World’s Billionaires, this year there are just 793 people that made it to the list, a 30% decline from the previous year. As contrary to the presumption that the uber-rich will continue spending on frivolous luxuries, some of them have been badly bit and have become a lot poorer. “Their collective net worth is $2.4 trillion, down $2 trillion from a year ago. Their average net worth fell 23% to $3 billion.” Though what differentiates them from the masses is they ultimately tend to bounce back like Bill Gates, who reportedly lost $18 billion but regained his title as the world’s richest man, followed by Warren Buffett and Mexican telecom titan Carlos Slim Helú. India’s Anil Ambani lost $32 billion—76% of his fortune—as shares of his Reliance Communications, Reliance Power and Reliance Capital all collapsed. Though the wealthiest of consumers are still spending on frivolous luxuries, as a whole the upper-stratum of the society has bore the brunt of it.

MotoArt, the company that turns vintage aviation parts into stunning fixtures for the home and office, is now back with the 747 Jet Liner Bed. This bed has been made using an authentic 747 engine nacelle cowling as the headboard. They have combined an 84″ diameter round mattress and box spring to ensure a perfect fit. The nacelle headboard finish comes complete with acrylic automotive paint, mirror-polished leading nose ring and green Plexiglas end caps. MotoArt came up with this bed for the reason that round beds, which were quite famous in the ‘60s, are now making a comeback. If you have a serious taste for aeronautics, you must sleep on something that shows it.

Thanks, MotoArt
