Manhattan men’s accessories company Kale Miles is marketing a new leather belt that retails for a cool $18,000. Although, the belts from the house usually run $240 to $380, this heavily- priced belt costs more than a car or 400 percent more than the $45 version from Banana Republic. The stocky price tag comes from the seven-to-eight-ounce platinum buckle considering the thing that an ounce of platinum is worth about $1,560. It takes designer Kristina Pitaniello around three weeks to make the buckle in a Boston workshop and no two are identical. The price of the belt, however, depends on the price of platinum for the day. The leathers used are tanned for over a year, which makes the product longer-lasting and provides a glossy, smooth finish. The finished product is one single layer of thick cowhide that retains its shape for decades and the average weight of each belt, excluding the buckle, is around nine ounces. It’s time to tighten your pant and the wallet too.
