wheat field with crows

A Vincent Van Gogh masterpiece, supposed to be the artist’s final piece of work, completed on 10th July 1890, is to be put on the public market for the first time. Dubbed ‘The Fields (Wheat Fields)‘, this painting is anticipated to become one of the most highly-valued paintings ever auctioned. The painting was completed just 19 days before he walked into the fields and shot himself in the chest with a revolver. The Fields will be shown at Sotheby’s in London on 7th October and sold at auction in New York one month later with an estimated list price of £17 million.

The Dutch Post-Impressionist artist is highly respected for his paintings and drawings, which include some of the world’s best known, most popular and most expensive pieces. Wheat Field with Crows is thought to be the painter’s last painting and the rumors even say that he died while he was painting it. But, there are no facts to support the notion. The Fields falls in a distinguished series of canvases painted in early July 1890, in which the sprawling golden wheat field of Auvers-sur-Oise was the essential subject that caught his imagination.

If the painting fetches its estimated price, it would enter the list of most highly-valued paintings ever auctioned.
