At the Christie’s International’s Russian winter auction next month, a previously unrecorded Faberge egg, which was an engagement gift to Baron Edouard de Rothschild, could sell for a record price of $18 million. The gold and enamel egg has been dated 1902 and signed by Karl Faberge. It features a clock with a diamond-set cockerel that pops up every hour and flaps its wings. Christie’s believe that this work will fetch $12 million to $18 million, which is much more than the $9.6 million auction record set by Faberge’s Imperial Winter Egg at Christie’s in New York in 2002.

Valentin Skurlov, Russia’s leading Faberge historian cited that this unrecorded egg is on the level of an Imperial Egg in terms of quality. Faberge has made 50 Easter Eggs for the Imperial family from 1885 to 1916. Some eggs have also been made for affluent, non-royal clients.
