These days, the concept of an open, free-standing kitchen is much preferred over the stereotyped setup of a kitchen enclosed within four walls. Apart from saving space, such an arrangement also makes cooking less boring and more fun as one can interact with family members while cutting, chopping or frying. Spanish designer Alfonso Rico Nieto has realized the niche for such openness and hence shaped up a “Stand by” kitchen. Consisting of three-leveled shelves, it has enough space for cooking as well as dining. Ingeniously designed to accommodate all the essentials of a basic kitchen, the “Stand by” makes a complete kitchen for a small family. Fitted with a sink on the topmost shelf, it sports a portable cooking plate too. A small storage cabinet serves as a base for the structure. Small pull-out drawers are found on the stands of the lower shelves. It drives home the fact that just because urban homes are short on space doesn’t mean that the kitchen should be short-changed on style or performance.

Though such a compact arrangement won’t fit in with large family setups, it will certainly fit the abodes of bachelors or singles. The “Stand by” will also find its way into offices that boast of a well-equipped pantry.
