In the past, we have scouted some of the best office chairs available on the market to convince you to buy one if your job requires you to sit for long hours in front of computer or plainly to give yourself the C.E.O treatment. But, apparently, we forgot to add Steelcase chairs to the list, and once we got our hands-on the Steelcase Leap Chair we knew it belonged on our list. Though customs clearance and transportation formalities deprived us from an unboxing experience, finding out the chair in one piece (with no assembly required at all) pretty much made-up for it. The Leap chair bears a vague resemblance to the Allsteel Acuity Chair with its ergonomic design that conforms to your body and actually changes shape to mimic the movement of your spine, and also its streamlined contour with upholstered seat and back.

The task chair features adjustable controls right at your disposal with all of the levers bearing neat labels, so you don’t need a manual to know its functionalities to mold it according to your comfort. The chair focuses on the ergonomics, nonetheless it scores design-wise as well in spite of its simplicity and will fit your office space nicely. No wonder the chair is the winner of many design awards. I particularly liked its super-adjustable arm cap feature which allows the arm rests to pivot in any direction without moving away from your desk.
The Leap chair received Silver Cradle to Cradle Product Certification from MBDC and is up to 94% recyclable, which is why it strikes a chord with everyone. The model we tested has an MSRP/list price of $1,300, which makes it a high-end office chair. But, if you can, then this chair will help you make a leap in your work efficiency, and justifies its hefty price tag.
The following is a detailed insight on each of its prominent features and in different profiles:
LiveBack:
The Leap chair’s back changes shape to support the entire spine. The lower back firmness feature keeps your lower back firm for a comfortable posture and stays with your body in different sitting positions all through when you are seated on the chair. The chair allows you total comfort in five different positions.
Adjustable Seat Depth:
Adjustable seat depth accommodates different body shapes for long-term comfort.
Thermal Comfort:
Thanks to slats in both its back and seat, and the special foam it uses, the Leap chair offers excellent “breathability” even in hot weather.
Height, Depth, Width, and Pivot Arms:
Arms telescope in and out, move forward and back, pivot and adjust up and down so you can find a natural position that comfortably supports the wrists, forearms, shoulders and neck and you remain oriented to your work.
Flexible Seat Edge:
When you recline or lean forward, the seat edge flexes to relieve pressure on the back of the legs.
Steelcase claims that increased ergonomics increases productivity, but you won’t know this until you try it yourself. So, guys..order one for yourself and relieve your overworked body of the work stress that’s inherent to the desk job. Also, check out the complete catalog and prototypes to make a wise choice to fit your budget. There is even a Leap WorkLounge with a matching ottoman to rest your feet on, priced at a mighty $2699 for a lounge feel.
Thumbs up to the Steelcase folks for making us realize the urgency of getting one to foster a comfortable and professional work environment. It has made me greedy to look for a matching workstation for a heavenly work experience. Anyways, those of you who already own one, we would like to hear your take on it further or which of the company’s prototype chairs you actually want to turn real in the future.
