Which format you support - HD-DVD or Blu-ray? How about having both of them in a single device? We’ve been hearing about the combo HD-DVD/Blu-ray player for a while, but Samsung just announced release dates, pricing, and tons of other info. The company’s first dual-format HD optical disc player dubbed BD-UP5000 offers support for interactivity technologies, the HDi and BD-Java. The combo player throws out Blu-ray playback at native HD resolution of 1080p, 1080i, 720p, and 1080p at 24 fps or 60 fps while HD-DVD playback is generated at 1080p/1080i/720p. It comes loaded with stereo and 7.1-channel audio outputs, coaxial and optical digital audio outputs. Connectivity is taken care of by HDMI, component video, S-Video and composite video outputs. The BD-UP5000 is scheduled to hit the shelves in the fourth quarter of this year for $1,049.
