Houseboats are most often considered a tourist attraction. They are generally used to live in for a few days as it gives the visitors of a particular place a very interesting and exciting experience. But with every inch of space available being taken up with each passing day, it seems that the next place that we wish to inhabit is on the water surface. The very mention of living on water or close to it reminds me of the movie ‘Lake House’, but then let me not get started about that.
Houseboats are being revamped and are being designed in such a way that they appeal to individuals seeking the modern day lifestyle. The traditional Houseboats are very narrow, congested and are designed only to amuse and not to sustain the boat as a permanent place of living. But Waterliving, a group of eco-conscious American and Danish architects and businessmen based in Copenhagen, are changing that perception by designing Houseboats that might be just better than the average home.
Costing from £290,000 to £400,000 depending on the model, they have been in use in Denmark since a long time and are now finding their way into the lives of the British. They are both stylish and spacious offering you all the luxuries that any modern home might offer. They also have a wonderful feel attached to them as they constantly move up and down creating a very harmonious and tranquil atmosphere. The boats are designed in such a way that they are fixed by two pipes, one to the bank and the other on the other side of the boat. This allows for the boat to move only up and down but not sideways.
With growing need for space, some of the more congested areas of the world might be tempted to take this up. I personally think it is a great idea and those who can get one of these are surely lucky. They offer so much and most importantly an escape from the concrete jungles that surround us. Tranquility; both of the mind and the heart, is a rare gift to have.
