Okay, it was too late. But I’m sure, you all will be thrilled to know that it was the Junior Cool Geek who kept Peter Rojas from sharing all the cooldom. Yes, Peter is now the proud father of a son. Peter and Jill, please accept our heartiest congratulations. It’s great that you still managed to take on all the questions. Here are the answers:
1). Clark: Music sites are not known for their money-making potential. How do you plan to make RCRD LBL a profitable venture to set an example for the online music industry?
Peter: RCRD LBL has actually been profitable since launch! The key is to keeping costs low, something the music industry isn’t very familiar with.
2). Paul: Do you foresee a future Engadget or Gizmodo or will the pioneers continue to lead the blogging scenario forever?
Peter: The nature of the web is change, hard to see any site staying on top forever, but I also think both sites are doing well for a reason.
3). Dominic Rivera: Being some sort of an outsider now from blogging and with the current developments in Weblogs Inc. (closure of some and content cuts for some blogs), where do you think blogging is, in general, headed?
Peter: Blogging is a very well-established medium now, and as it matures it faces a lot of the same challenges as other mediums. This is actually a good sign!
4). Vikas: Peter, I think it’s high time you spill the beans. What exactly are you cooking up with Ryan Block? What makes both of you gel together and how far will the duo’s putting away the reins affect Engadget?
Peter: We’ll have plenty to say when we launch, for right now we have a new podcast everyone can check out, especially if you’re a fan of the old Engadget podcast.
5). Norah: What does Peter Rojas most enjoy doing: reviewing gadgets or distributing music and why?
Peter: I like them both! Most people are passionate about more than one thing, and I’ve been lucky enough to build businesses out of my two main passions.
6). Blair: Can the web help make rock stars of the stature of the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, et al.?
Peter: Probably not, I think the era of the superstar is coming to a close, and instead we’ll see more and more microstars with smaller, but far more passionate, fan bases.
7). Naveen: Jason Calacanis says “Blogging is dead”? Your views?
Peter: Blogging has just become “normal” now, it’s not edgy or controversial anymore. Again, I think this is good thing, it shows that the medium has matured and become established, (professional) blogs are just as legitimate now as magazines and newspapers, and often have more readers and influence. The alternative was for blogging to never catch on and remain forever at the margins.
8). Cody: You have worked with Weblogs Inc. and later with AOL. Which was a more satisfying experience?
Peter: Both were different, WIN was a startup, AOL is a big company. Each had its own challenges and rewards. I actually enjoyed working for AOL more than one might expect. There are a lot of really great people there, some of whom are among my closest friends now. AOL treated me with a lot of respect, and never tried to interfere with how we ran Engadget. They understood that we needed to be able to do our thing with a minimum of oversight.
9). Bram: How many big brands do you hope to pull in for RCRD LBL in the near future? What are the new features you are planning to roll out to make your music community more active?
Peter: We’ve already worked with a number of blue chip brands, including BMW, Puma, Nikon, Nokia, T-Mobile, Virgin America, Levi’s, Lexus, Microsoft, etc., and we have a bunch more on tap for later this year and early next year. We are introducing new features to RCRD LBL all the time, next up we’re going to make it easier to track what your friends are checking out on the site, as well as make it easier to download music with fewer clicks.
10). Gabriel: What’s the biggest problem in bringing established brands compared to emerging artists?
Peter: Our biggest challenge is just getting brands to do something different and more interesting than banner ads. It’s hard to get people out of their comfort zone, but when they do the results are WAY better.
11). Roshan: How big is your current staff and how do you plan to expand it? Any venture funding on the cards for 2008?
Peter: We have two other full-time people besides myself, and a great time of freelance contributors. We’ll almost definitely be expanding sometime early next year.
12). Team: Your views on Born Rich & Instablogs Network?
Peter: I remember when you guys launched a few years ago and it’s great to see how much you’ve grown!
