Calling all the uber-rich Buddhists! The special theme for Sotheby’s sale this September will be ‘The Arts of the Buddha,’ featuring works of the major Far Eastern cultures in India, China and Cambodia. Among many other unique items, up for auction will be gilt copper Maitreya (pictured above) festooned with silver and semiprecious stones. The two foot statue is one of the most important Himalayan works of art ever to come to an auction. The statue, which dates back from 13th Century Tibet, is estimated to sell for $3.5 million to $4.5 million.
