portrait of aestheteA painting by an unknown artist, which was expected to fetch £200 at auction went for £205,000, and is possibly worth more than £5 million. The Lot 403 painting was simply among many other items at a motley selection up for auction in Market Harborough, Leicestershire. It is a picture of a black-clad, bearded man with his face half turned to the right and there is a touching expression in his eyes. It was expected to go for somewhere between £150 and £200, but the bidding surprisingly ended at a whopping £205,000 ($420,000). The painting emerged as a supposed early work by Renaissance master Titian. Old Master dealer and art expert Simon Dickinson says that the digital image of the painting looks like an early Titian to him from around 1512 or 1515. For now, no one knows the buyer of this masterpiece. The painting was described as “18th Century Continental School, Half-length portrait of Aesthete” at the auction.
