Terrafugia Transition’s first flight on March 5th, 2009 at Plattsburgh International Airport made the flying car concept a plausible one. Flying cars are the future. And the latest concept on the list comes from Leigh Aerosystems’ flying automobile called the “High Road.” The High Road aerocar seems to have drawn its inspiration from Molt Taylor’s Aerocar, the only certified airplane in history that can be legally driven on US roads. The High Road has successfully completed initial wind tunnel tests at the San Diego Air and Space Museum 12-foot tunnel, and detailed mechanical and structural design is underway. Stephen Harris, the man behind Leigh Aerosystems said, “We were extremely pleased how the data came out, we believe we have a practical airplane.” Leigh Aerosystems has designed numerous weapons systems and drones for the military which provides them the expertise to design a model that could be actually built. The key flight operational and performance goals include: 180 mph cruise speed at 15,000 ft., 20,000 ft ceiling and a 500-mile range. The company is seeking outside investment in order to rapidly move forward to certification and production.
