If you thought the Yamaha My Room II soundproof enclosure was bit small for you, you need to take a look at the KT listening room, which has been built out of a converted 20-foot shipping container. This one is probably not for sale, but an installation specifically designed for the Tokyo Designers Week 2008. The KT listening room endeavors to create a personal audio experience in a private space. Inside the room is a circle of speakers that is focally oriented toward the listener’s sofa. This circle of speakers is formed by CNC-cut fiberboard panels and compressed polyester foam panels. The designers hoped to create a “spatial sensation that is in-between the notion of the concert hall and the iPod headphone.” The acoustic design of the room is based on principles of the soundproofing, reflectivity, rigidity and channeling of the reverberation. Designed by MAT Studio and Elastik, the KT listening room was the winner of Dezeen’s contest for the best conversion of a shipping container.
