1. Joseph: John, how badly you think the global financial crisis has hit the blogosphere? Also, you have worked with both online and offline mediums, so share with us your take on how the recession has affected traditional media.

John: There will be a shake-out in the blogosphere with established blogs become part of the “news cycle” and smaller, originally commercial blogs falling out or becoming more personal. With everything vying for the same slice of the ad pie, it will be harder and harder to get even a tiny sliver of revenue.
Offline media, at least in the tech space, is dead and buried. PC Magazine is going online and the rest of the magazines will follow. I foresee magazines like Computer Shopper and Laptop folding into their respective online entities this year.

2. Drew: What’s the geekiest gift you’ve got till date and share with us your wish list for this Christmas?

John: The geekiest gift was my first Packard Bell 286 computer when I was in high school. It basically ruined me. This Christmas I want a Canon Rebel XSi.

3. Tina: How active are you on social networking and bookmarking sites? What do you have to say about whether these tools are satisfying the current market needs or not and how they should or would morph in the coming years?

John:
I try to keep my profiles up to date. They’ve replaced personal blogs as a way to keep your friends abreast of what’s going on in your life and vice versa. I got to relive my high school reunion on Facebook, which was considerably better than going in person.

4. Vikas: What do you think is the future of RSS? How it can emerge as a handy e-commerce tool out of the blogosphere? Will it?

John: RSS is a technology. It can be used as an e-commerce tool but in a way that will be invisible to all but the original architects. You can RSS anything and, given the right “reader” you can add anything you want to the stream.

5. Rachel: What do you hate about blogging - anything?

John: Not much. It’s fun.

6. Veronica: There are no videos on CrunchGear. Any plans to step into the arena?

John: There are videos on CrunchGear.

7. Nick: Taking a look at 2008, so far what all are your recommendations for Top Gadgets of 2008?

John:
MacBook Air, Canon Rebel XSi, iPhone 3G. That’s about it.

8. David: What gadget announcements are you looking forward to at the upcoming CES 2009?

John: Absolutely nothing. CES will be another me-too HD TV fest. There are no revenue vacuums for CE manufacturers to fill – last year it was GPS devices, before that it was LCD TVs – so it will just be a bunch of people standing around and then drinking in horrible Las Vegas bars.

9. Cory: When writing on so many different topics for so many different publications, how do you make sure your voice shines through and people can connect to you as a writer?

John: I try to write well.

10. Team: Your views on BornRich & Instablogs?

John: You guys have some great ideas.
