
It’s been over a year since we introduced you to our picks for the Top 10 high-tech luxury beds, and since then so many luxury sleep systems have been launched. Recently, renowned designer Karim Rashid created three new beds for luxury bedding company, Hollandia International. The same firm launched the Executive SAFE-T Bed last December. At the Milan Design Show 2009, British designer Adam Farlie exhibited the Vessel One, a bed that records conversations and sounds, replaying them when there is silence. Let’s take a look at all these recently unveiled sleep systems and the ones that deserve a mention.
• The Glow Bed

The Glow Bed is a compact design that enjoys a high gloss finish, drawers for storage under the bed and in the headboard, an iPod docking station and cabinet doors in the headboard that swing out to create side tables.
• Vessel One by Adam Farlie

Vessel One designed by Adam Farlie is a bed that asks whether an object can become a substitute for a person. Vessel One records the sound made by the people lying on it and replays them at random later, in silence. It’s like reliving old moments. Vessel One bed was shown at the Milan Deisgn show and is made of Corian.
• Executive SAFE-T Bed

The high-tech SAFE-T Bed was originally developed for an international customer who wanted to keep a handgun safely stored yet close to him in bed for security purposes. The safe is positioned in the head joint of the bed base, just under the mattress. Once the safe’s door is closed, it securely locks with a key. Using Velcro to keep it in place, an additional piece of fabric camouflages the door. The Executive SAFE-T Bed, with retractable TV unit, is priced at a hefty $20,400.
• The Combi Bed

The recently unveiled Combi double bed By Karim Rashid features a high-gloss lacquer painted frame in a range of color combinations. The headboard doubles as a desk with closable compartments, including a rolling shutter that can be used for storage purposes. The bed comes complete with an iPod docking station and massage system.
Cocoon-like high-tech beds:
• Transport Pod Bed

Designed by Alberto Frias, the stylish Pod Bed comes equipped with a set of Anthony Gallo‘s four-inch Nucleus Micro speakers and a 240-watt MPS subwoofer. The Transport perceptual pod creates a sensual light, sound and space environment. The temperature-controlled waterbed surface also has the ability to perform a crazy LED light show.
• Hi-Can High Fidelity Canopy

Conceptualized by Italian designer Edoardo Carlino, the Hi-Can High Fidelity Canopy features integrated flaps, ventilation along with a hi-fi system and a screen with DVD player. It will make you feel like you’re floating in the middle of an iMax theatre.
• Karim Rashid’s Sphera Bed

The Sphera bed redefines the conventional understanding of bedroom furniture and condenses the whole experience into an intimate space. A 32” color television (theater system optional) can be fitted on the bed’s front wall. Also adding to the experience are covered LED florescent canopy-top lights, a champagne holder and a vanity mirror on the outside of one of the walls. The bed is fitted with the exclusive Hollandia advanced sleep amenities which offer the most luxuries mattress comforts with its adjustability and message systems.
• The Lomme Bed

The Lomme bed features a muscle-relaxing system, with light and sound therapy for blocking out external distractions. The egg-shaped bed can be hooked up to an iPod.
Leaders in the world of high tech bedding:
• Starry Night Sleep Technology Bed

At $50,000, it’s not just another run-of-the-mill luxury bed. It touts anti-snore technology to reduce snoring in mild to moderate cases by elevating your upper body a few degrees. Its dual programmable temperature control from 68 to 117 degrees Fahrenheit adjusts the temperature to your liking. The Sleep Diagnostic Center monitors body movement and breathing pattern throughout the night. The bed features an iPod docking station and 2500-watt surround sound system with four 8-inch subwoofers. Other salient specs include internet connectivity, wireless RF remote that connects to a 1.5TB media server with four gigs of RAM and a 1080p projector.
• Hollandia Platinum-Luxe Elite sleep system

The Hollandia Platinum-Luxe Elite sleep system boasts loads of other luxury options besides a retractable 32-inch Sony Bravia HDTV integrated into the bed’s footboard. The TV sits 80 inches from the headboard, slightly exceeding the normal 1:3 ratio of screen size to viewer distance, and the brightness dynamically adjusts to the ambient light, to reduce eye strain. The Elite is also equipped with a Sony Bravia theater system that includes a five DVD/CD changer, a five speaker surround sound system, a subwoofer beneath the bed for a complete hi-end experience and an iPod docking station. It sells for $35,000.
