We finally present you the answers to all your questions from this week’s Cool Geek, Lisa Katayama of Tokyo Mango. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the exciting answers. So, here comes Lisa…
1. Naveen: In the image here, we see you with His Highness the Dalai Lama. How was your experience meeting him and what was that special thing you gained out of the meeting?
Lisa: HH was more like a gentle grandfather figure than a holy man. He laughed a lot, he spoke words of wisdom and told poop jokes. Serious. I met him when I went to Dharamsala, India in October 2007. You can read about my trip and my conversation with him and his brother here.
2. Elliot: You contribute to a plethora of sites, yet there has to be a favorite, which one’s yours and why?
Lisa: Tough question. I love Boing Boing, and I love TokyoMango—my two main blogging gigs right now—but I still love writing for print magazines the most. There’s just something special about seeing your work on glossy color paper in a book full of work by other amazingly articulate people.
3. Marissa: America wants to legalize pot, Cory Doctorow wants to; what about you?
Lisa: Yes, legalize pot!
4. Jared: Lisa, I’m a little curious. Why are all the weird gizmos and other stuff tagged “from Japan” by default? Is Japan really a frontrunner or is it hype created by bloggers?
Lisa: Not all weird gizmos are from Japan, but the Japanese do produce a large portion of the world’s supply of strange gadgets. Why? It’s probably because Japan had a very high growth economic period with lots of technological advancement; and then, once everything useful existed already, there were all these smart engineers and gadget makers with nothing to do. So they started making gadgets that are valued more for entertainment value than utility.
5. Lalit: Anything special in the pipeline for TokyoMango?
Lisa: TokyoMango is never planned out more than a day in advance. So yes, many special things, but it’s still a surprise—even to me!
6. Felix: Which tools do you use to efficiently manage your blog? Any widgets or tips you would like to share with our readers.
Lisa: I use Typepad.
7. Hannah: What do you find to be the most rewarding aspect of blogging?
Lisa: As a writer, I think it has been good for my momentum to have something published in such a public way every day. I have to keep my head up and keep writing, otherwise my traffic will go down and I’ll get lazy and I probably wouldn’t be as productive.
8. Ethan: Any tips for smaller to medium sized blogs in terms of growth?
Lisa: A strong voice and solid writing are key, I think. A lot of smaller blogs have great material but they’re just not written that well.
9. Turner: What would you like to be remembered as - a blogger, an entrepreneur or an adventure junkie?
Lisa: Ohh, I like adventure junkie, but I don’t know if that’s me–I spend a lot of time on the couch, too. I’d like to be remembered as a journalist. With blogging and new media, the definition of journalist keeps changing, but I’m going to try to stay on top of it and not stray too far from it.
10. Nandini: Your views on Bornrich and Instablogs Network!
Lisa: I think it’s great!
