I’ve heard a lot about pricey and unique yachts but never imagined someone could ever create a yacht that is made out of beef bones and human hair. But here’s a model of the British Royal Navy ship HMS Victory made out of beef bones and human hair proving my outlook wrong!
The 28in-long model, which was made by French prisoners of war imprisoned in British jails during the Napoleonic Wars, auctioned Wednesday was expected to fetch up to £30,000. Amazingly, the boat built from leftover beef bones from the prisoners’ meals gained more than expected amount i.e. it was sold for £36,000. HMS Victory was bought at Bonhams by a private overseas bidder who left an absentee bid.
Bones form the hull while human hair was used for the rigging and paper tissue for the flags. Other details include anchors, belfry and ship’s boats while small bones were used for operating the guns.
And the model had been in the private collection of the world’s greatest collector of antique Dutch weapons, Henk Visser.
